FLUX is pleased to present the new hand-carved porcelain vessels of Maria White Mebane. Inspired by organic forms and textures, Mebanes work engages the viewer in a tactile and sensory experience. The work is functional, sculptural and decisively elegant. The clean lines and simple forms are transformed through rhythmic carving which reveals abstracted studies of nature recalling insect wings, drying seed pods, even light reflecting off water. Through an exploration of the textured form, a personal carving style has evolved that defines and enhances Mebane's unique functional pieces. The glazes she has developed create effects ranging from crystal blue water to soft mossy green river stones.

Mebane earned a degree in Art from Winthrop University in South Carolina. She studied art in Rome and Florence and has participated in workshops at prestigious craft schools such as Penland School in South Carolina and Haystack Mountain School in Maine. Mebane went on to study sculpting with renowned ceramic artist Michael Sherrill, eventually assisting him on large-scale projects. Maria White Mebane has exhibited nationally and won numerous awards, and her work has been featured in several films and television series, most notably NBCs "Friends".
